AI for Trades in Australia: What CommBank's Class Won't Do

CommBank and OpenAI are handing Australian tradies free AI masterclasses — 62% lose more time to admin than to the job. A useful start, but here's the catch.

Your bank now wants to teach you AI

Sixty-two per cent of Australian small business owners say quoting, invoicing and scheduling eat up more of their week than the actual work. The job pays. The paperwork doesn't. And in early September, Australia's biggest bank decided that was a problem worth solving for you — CommBank and OpenAI launched a free AI Business Masterclass series aimed squarely at tradies. That 62% figure comes from the research sitting underneath it: an OpenAI-commissioned survey of more than 1,000 Australian small and medium business operators.

When a major bank starts running AI classes for its own customers, it's worth understanding both what you're being offered and what it quietly leaves undone.

What CommBank actually launched

This builds on a partnership the two announced in December 2025 — a push, alongside Coles and Wesfarmers, to bring basic AI skills to more than a million Australian workers and small businesses through OpenAI Academy courses that began rolling out this year. The September step narrowed the aim to trades specifically. The masterclasses, hosted free on CommBank's site, walk through turning site notes, photos and rough measurements into customer-ready quotes, using voice tools hands-free on the job, working out materials, and building simple tools like quote calculators, job trackers and lead follow-up systems.

It's genuinely useful content, and free is the right price for learning what the technology can do. But a masterclass teaches you what a tool can do. It doesn't do it.

What AI for trades in Australia actually buys you

The admin tax the survey names is measured elsewhere too. ServiceTitan's Australian State of the Trades Report 2026 found 57% of trade operators now rank billing and accounts receivable as their number-one operational pain point — up from 20% a year earlier. The same survey behind CommBank's push found 45% of construction respondents had lost potential work because they responded too slowly. That second number isn't an annoyance; it's revenue walking out the door. The quote that goes out tonight, not next Tuesday, is the one that wins the job. This is a revenue capture problem wearing an admin costume.

The upside is measured too, and it's concrete. Of the owners who've actually started using AI tools, nearly three in four say they save at least an hour a week, and more than a quarter save seven hours or more. At a fully loaded trades rate of $65–95 an hour, seven hours back is $455–665 a week of recovered capacity — an extra job squeezed in, or a Saturday that stops being paperwork day. That's the Admin Leverage bearing in one line: the same crew, the same tools, materially more billable output.

So why isn't everyone doing it? ServiceTitan found 63% of trade businesses believe AI is relevant to them, but only 38% actually use it. The gap isn't belief — tradies are well past the "is this real" question. The gap is implementation. If you're not sure where your own business sits, it's worth mapping where AI could take work off your plate before you sit through a single class.

The catch the free class won't mention

Here's where "free" stops. A masterclass ends with you knowing ChatGPT can draft a quote from a photo. The hours only come back when that quote actually flows into your job-management system, the follow-up fires without you remembering it at 9pm, and the numbers land in your accounts without a second round of typing. That last mile — integration, not inspiration — is the entire job. It's also the part a one-hour class can't give you, because it depends on your tools, your pricing, your workflow.

This is the honest read on every free AI programme landing in Australian inboxes right now: take it. The awareness is worth having, and a bank-run course beats a vendor's sales pitch. But a plan is not an implementation, and a lesson is not a system. The businesses pulling seven hours a week out of the week aren't the ones who watched the video — they're the ones who wired one workflow end to end and then left it running. We've written before about how electricians are using AI to add capacity without adding headcount; the pattern there is the same. Knowing isn't doing.

What to do about it

Take the CommBank masterclass — it's free and it's good. Then do the thing it can't do for you. Pick your single biggest leak: for most trades businesses that's quoting lag or dropped follow-ups. Time it honestly for one week — how long from site visit to quote sent, how many enquiries never got a second call. Then automate that one path, end to end, before you touch anything else. Don't roll out five tools. Fix one job-to-cash bottleneck until it runs without you, measure what it gave back, and move to the next. That's how the 38% who use AI pull away from the 63% who merely rate it.

Key takeaways

01CommBank and OpenAI launched a free, trades-specific AI Business Masterclass series in September 2026 — part of a December 2025 push (with Coles and Wesfarmers) to reach more than a million Australian small businesses via OpenAI Academy.
02An OpenAI-commissioned survey of 1,000+ Australian SMB operators found 62% say quoting, invoicing and scheduling eat more of their week than the work, and 45% of construction respondents had lost work to slow response times.
03ServiceTitan's 2026 trades report found 57% now rank billing/AR as their #1 pain (up from 20%), and that 63% think AI is relevant while only 38% use it — the gap is implementation, not belief.
04Free training teaches what AI can do; it won't wire it into your workflow. Take the class, then automate one job-to-cash path end to end — AI users report saving up to 7+ hours a week ($455–665 at a $65–95 loaded rate).

Common questions

Is the CommBank AI masterclass for tradies free?

Yes. CommBank and OpenAI launched a free AI Business Masterclass series, hosted on CommBank's website, with a trades-specific stream from September 2026. It covers turning photos and site notes into quotes, hands-free voice tools, materials calculations and simple job trackers and follow-up systems. It's part of a push to reach more than a million Australian small businesses.

How much time can AI actually save a trade business?

In the OpenAI survey of 1,000+ Australian SMB operators, nearly three in four owners who had started using AI tools said they save at least an hour a week, and more than a quarter said they save seven hours or more. At a fully loaded trades rate of $65–95 an hour, seven hours back is roughly $455–665 a week of recovered capacity.

Where should a tradie start with AI?

Start with your biggest measured leak. For most trades businesses that's quoting lag or dropped follow-ups — 62% of owners say admin eats more of the week than the work, and 45% of construction firms have lost jobs to slow replies. Time one path for a week, then automate it end to end before adding any other tool.

Assumptions & methodology
  1. OpenAI survey figures (62% say quoting/invoicing/scheduling eats more of the week than the work; 45% of construction respondents lost work to slow response; 56% feel regular time pressure from stacked admin; nearly three in four AI users save at least an hour a week and more than a quarter save seven hours or more) are from research commissioned by OpenAI surveying more than 1,000 Australian small and medium business owners and operators, as reported by Dynamic Business (September 2026). The primary OpenAI dataset was not directly accessible; figures are attributed to that reporting.
  2. ServiceTitan figures (57% of operators rank billing/AR as their #1 operational pain, up from 20% the prior year; 63% of trade businesses believe AI is relevant while 38% currently use it) are from the ServiceTitan Australian State of the Trades Report 2026 summary page.
  3. The CommBank–OpenAI partnership (a national skills push targeting more than one million small businesses, announced December 2025 with Coles and Wesfarmers, with OpenAI Academy courses rolling out from 2026, and a trades-specific masterclass series launched September 2026) is drawn from CommBank's December 2025 newsroom release and Dynamic Business's September 2026 reporting.
  4. The $455–665/week capacity figure is illustrative: seven hours multiplied by a fully loaded trades rate of $65–95/hour (wages, super, vehicle, fuel, insurance), CoterieLabs' standard range for Australian trades. It is an estimate of recovered capacity value, not a cash saving.
