MYOB's AI Now Drafts Your BAS. Here's What It Can't Do.

MYOB's AI BAS tool goes on sale in August, drafting quarterly BAS for GST-registered businesses. Here's what it handles — and where a human still finishes.

From August, any MYOB Business Lite or Pro subscriber can buy an AI that drafts their quarterly BAS. MYOB calls it Australia's first agentic BAS solution — software that watches the books all quarter, categorises transactions, flags GST anomalies, and hands you a pre-populated lodgment report. For the roughly 2.6 million GST-registered businesses that fill in a BAS by hand four times a year, that is a genuine shift.

But the fine print decides whether it saves you a day or lands you a penalty. Read it before you switch it on.

AI BAS runs in the background rather than at quarter-end. It flags missing receipts and GST issues as they happen, categorises transactions automatically, tracks BAS preparation continuously, and syncs approved changes back into your accounting books. By the time you sit down to lodge, most of the prep is already done: the tool produces a report with your BAS totals ready for review.

MYOB began rolling it out to eligible non-employing customers on 3 June 2026. From August it becomes a paid add-on to a Business Lite or Pro subscription. This is part of the AI arms race MYOB and Xero kicked off earlier this year — AI landing inside the tools you already pay for, rather than a product you go shopping for.

Here is where the tool stops. First, it handles simple BAS scenarios only: the G1, 1A and 1B labels, the sales-and-GST core. Second, it works on cash-based accounts; accrual support is still expanding. Third, it is for non-employing businesses initially — the moment you have staff, PAYG withholding and wages sit outside it.

Fourth, and most important: AI BAS does not lodge with the ATO. It drafts the figures. You submit them, and you own their accuracy. A drafted BAS you lodge without reading is a mistake with your name on it, not the vendor's — the AI in your accounting software is already a compliance risk you carry, not MYOB.

For a sole trader on cash accounting with no employees — a solo sparky, a freelance bookkeeper, an independent consultant — this covers most of the quarterly grind. Turn it on, and the BAS is largely assembled before you sit down to it. That is the clearest admin leverage win an owner-operator can get without hiring anyone.

For an accounting or bookkeeping firm, the value sits in a different place. MYOB's own research found 72% of accounting professionals believe the sector is short of talent. A tool that arrives with the client file already largely prepared doesn't replace the accountant — it strips the low-judgment data-wrangling that eats junior hours, so the same team carries more clients. That's the same pattern behind firms closing the books 7.5 days faster with AI: one compliance task down, capacity up.

But notice where the tool draws its own line. It automates the categorising and the arithmetic, then stops exactly where the judgment starts: the complex GST treatments, the accrual clients, the businesses with payroll, and the final call on whether the numbers are right before they go to the ATO. If you're not sure which of your clients fall inside those boundaries and which don't, that mapping is a good first conversation.

If you're a simple, cash-based, non-employing business, turn AI BAS on for one quarter and check every draft against the source transactions before you lodge. Treat it as a fast first draft, not a final answer, until it has earned your trust. If you run a firm, the higher-value move isn't the feature itself — it's mapping which clients fall inside the tool's four boundaries and which don't. That tells you exactly where automation ends and billable judgment begins, and it stops you quietly leaning on a tool for a client it was never built to handle.

Key takeaways

MYOB's AI BAS — which it calls Australia's first agentic BAS solution — becomes a paid add-on to Business Lite and Pro subscriptions from August 2026, drafting quarterly BAS for GST-registered businesses.
It handles only simple BAS scenarios (the G1, 1A and 1B labels), cash-based accounts and non-employing businesses initially — and it does not lodge with the ATO. You submit the figures and own their accuracy.
For sole traders on cash accounting it removes most of the quarterly BAS grind. For firms it frees junior hours as 72% of accounting professionals say the sector is short of talent.
The tool stops exactly where judgment starts: complex GST treatments, accrual clients, employing businesses, and the final accuracy check before lodgment.

Common questions

Does MYOB AI BAS lodge my BAS with the ATO?

No. AI BAS prepares and pre-populates your BAS figures for review, but it does not lodge directly with the ATO. You submit the figures yourself and remain responsible for their accuracy.

Can AI BAS handle a business with employees or accrual accounting?

Not initially. The tool launches for non-employing businesses on cash-based accounts, covering simple BAS scenarios (the G1, 1A and 1B labels). Accrual support is expanding over time, and businesses with payroll fall outside the current scope.

Is an AI-prepared BAS accurate enough to trust?

It drafts the figures and flags anomalies, but you own what gets lodged. Treat it as a fast first draft, check every entry against source transactions before submitting, and give it a quarter to earn your trust.

Assumptions & methodology
  1. AI BAS's functionality, availability (rolled out to eligible non-employing MYOB Business Lite/Pro customers from 3 June 2026; available to purchase with a subscription from August 2026) and stated limitations (simple BAS scenarios covering the G1, 1A and 1B labels; cash-based accounts with accrual support expanding; non-employing businesses initially; and that it does not lodge directly with the ATO) are from MYOB's AI BAS product page, accessed July 2026.
  2. The description of AI BAS as 'Australia's first agentic BAS solution' and the ~2.6 million GST-registered small businesses figure are from MYOB's press release 'MYOB rolls out suite of AI products to power up SME productivity' (2 March 2026).
  3. The figure that 72% of accounting professionals feel there is a talent shortage across the sector is MYOB research reported by Accountants Daily ('MYOB unveils new AI capabilities', March 2026).
  4. 'Most of the prep is already done' and 'largely assembled/prepared' paraphrase MYOB's own description of the tool producing a pre-populated report by lodgment time; they are not a MYOB-published percentage.
